Quote:The U.S. Army is testing the Autonomous Rotorcraft Sniper System (ARSS) — a remote-controlled unmanned Vigilante robot helicopter equipped with a high-velocity sniper rifle.
Its RND Edge semi-automatic gun is mounted on a self-stabilizing turret with built-in zoom camera, and fires 7 to 10 precisely aimed .338-caliber rounds per second.
Back on the ground, a human directs it using a modified Xbox 360 controller, which plugs into a laptop so that the operator can see what the drone sees.

Yeah, I saw that. I like it. I'm sure there are cases where firing a hellfire missile is a little bit of overkill.

As long as this technology is used to augment our fighting force and not replace it I'm happy. We can never replace trained soldiers with machines.

Never say never. I mean we certainly never should, but that doesn't mean it will never be possible.

My never was meant as we "Can't let it happen." not that it could never happen. We as humans need to maintain our ability to fight with our hands and rifles and not be dependent upon technology.

Its the same thing as the predictors right? Just in helicopter form? I mean a human is driving it right?
I love that we can go out and kill the enemy, and the only thing we risk, is $$$$ that went into the drones. Its like the reverse of the terrorest who strap bombs to thier chest and kill themselves to kill the enemy.
We just strap a bomb or gun on a piece of hardware and say "who the fuck cares if you shoot me down. The human is 100 miles away.

Yep, a human drives it ... for now. =)
I think this is more powerful in terms sniping though. This thing can hover and "watch" targets from a good distance away. With the predator, you'd be circling and probably wouldn't have the "hovering platform" precision and decision making capability (i.e. this thing hovers in silent mode while you call for the go ahead from the president).

That's fine, until Skynet becomes self-realized and decides our fate in a nanosecond.

Not in the US Service. There is still a very strong argument against build AI for the purpose of killing and rightfully so. I never want to see the day a computer makes the decision to take a human life.

I don't like it because the more unpersonal killing becomes the more likely we are to keep on killing.
Wars fought with robots (even if they don't have AI) will lead to just as many bad things as robots with AI.

If I could snap my fingers and send the world's military technology back to the dark ages I would. Real men fight with steel face to face.

I was under the impression Predator drones can be programmed with missions and left to their own devices and alert if they find anything useful, and that pilots can override and take control. WHereas the reaper drones are always controlled by humans

I'm happy to hear you say that. Killing is often and unfortunately necessary but the idea that we can one day go without it should always be the goal.

If fighting with gun technology makes you not a real man I don't know why steel should be allowed, we should just be in loincloths beating each other with sticks.
I would prefer a fight where a good trait like intelligence determines the winner compared to an animal trait like brute force.

Try using your brain when I lop it off with my sword. If I had the choice I prefer melee to range.

Good thing I target the source and not the grunts. Easier to kill one than millions.
