i've heard of a number of people not liking it but I relate it back to why these people didn't like the second one... it has a plot. The majority of complaints could be summed down to "but but.. I only wanna see cool fights... *sniffle*"
Glad to see a good review before I go to see it this weekend.

I thought it was great.
You're still left basically forming some of your own opinions, though, there's still a couple theories you could put up about what, exactly, is going on, but I'm sure that was intentional.
Some great action sequences in this one, too.

I've been reading the reviews on http://www.rottentomatoes.com and I can't wait to see this movie.
What bothers me is that people are being really blind to some realities of these movies.
Matrix: original was just that... original. It was a completely new and revolutionary take on how movies are done and experienced. The only thing that had come out that came anywhere near the same experience was Blade 1 which was released a few months prior.
Now, fast forward.
Movies upon Movies have come out that have ripped some of the ideas off of the matrix. That style is old news... the phrase "that was so 5 years ago" comes to mind.
People are trying to compare these new Matrix movies to the way they felt when the first one came out... well, you can't... it's a feeling that you can't compare to or get back until something totally original comes out again.
It's like when you first played EQ (or your first MMORPG if you didn't start w/ EQ). You were wowed by the magnitude of the game, the involvement, the interaction, the size, the feel, the intrigue. Do you get the same feel from any of these new games? NO because they're not "new". They may have new ideas but they're not revolutionary and no game will be revolutionary in that regard until they perfect a Virtual Reality MMORPG.
Matrix was revolutionary to movie making and people need to see these new movies compared to other movies now-a-days and not to the original, because they'll never get that back.
Blade and Scream:original were also revolutionary to the film industry.

Bah, Scream was just a revitalization of the "Airplane!" style.
Ah, one more comment about Matrix 3:
If they ever make a new Superman movie, his fight scenes better damn well be like that.

I saw it Wed. at 8:00 AM cause some friends dragged me out to see it. It sure as hell wasn't worth getting up early in the morning to see. They all thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. I thought it was alright. It made me appreciate the first one a lot more, for sure.
My impression: Two impressive fight sequences lasting about 20 minutes total. 100 minutes of repetitive, cliche-filled filler time, where one-dimensional characters pontificate about facile, simplistic love.
I saw both the original Matrix and Reloaded recently, as well as the lesser-known movie Dark City. I think Dark City is the best of the lot.
Thinking about Revolutions as I watched it, I could only think how little I cared for any of the characters, or even Zion itself, and how much better Revolutions *could* have been.

Lol see what I liked about Revolutions was that there didn't seem to be any plot at all. The fight scenes were much better than in Reloaded which I enjoyed.
I felt completely detached from the characters and from Zion as well. When trinity died I was like thank god, now I don't have to hear about how much her love for Neo means to her and we can get on to kicking some ass. I was actually more interested in seeing Zion destroyed than I was in seeing it saved.
The special effects were awesome but there is zero emotional investment on my part in the plot or the characters. Without that it just can't be a good movie in my opinion.

you must be thinking of the "Scary Movie" series, not "Scream".
Aadrya, isn't Dark City the one where a group of people keep recreating the city during the night and messing with people's thoughts until 1 guy developed mental powers as well and stood up to them?

Oh yeah. I just automatically associate the Scream mask to Scary Movie.
And yep, that's Dark City. That may be my favorite movie of all time, simply because of what the aliens were trying to accomplish, and the way they went about accomplishing it. Really cool concept, though you end up watching the whole movie before you realize what was actually going on. It goes from being a "pretty strange action movie" to a "really cool concept" in like the last 15 minutes.
Mostly what I liked about Matrix was that it IS so open ended. It leaves a lot of room for debate. You can't just watch it, talk about it for 5 minutes and then go home, you have to carry on 1 hour discussions about it over lunch. You could still make 2 or 3 pretty good theories on What The Hell Is Going On and support them with stuff from the movies.

heh, what's sad is that i own dark city on VHS.
I could see your point about Matrix Grumples... that all goes into the category "matters of opinion" as to whether people enjoy open/shut movies or "wide open for debate" ones.

I normally don't like open ended movies.
In the case of Matrix, though, I'd say I liked the open endedness largely because I didn't care about the characters either. Trinity died... whatever, who cares.
Movies that get you caring about the characters drive me nuts when they end without you knowing if the main character is even in a favorable situation or not, but Matrix, well.... There are lots of good things to debate because of the open-endedness, and "Is Neo alive?" isn't one of the things I even care enough to debate about, so that's okay. Will Zion prosper or be smushed by the machines? Don't really care. Was Zion still in the matrix? Now you're talkin.

The only thing that would make this movie worth seven bucks would be the brutal decapitation of Trinity, with a spoon. No, I've not seen it yet, but after the writers decided to change her from an ass-kicking icon of girl power to a greasy sappy love-bunnie, I really lost interest.
I did hear unanimous praise of the special effects during the battle of Zion, though.

Dark City is an awesome movie - bet the Wachowskis thought so too when they ripped off its ideas to make The Matrix. Alex Proyas (who did Dark City) has "I, Robot" (based on the Asimov book) coming out next year, which should be interesting.
I went into Matrix Revolutions with low expectations, and on that basis enjoyed it. A lot of the dialog made you cringe, but the eye candy was nice...not least that outfit that Monica Bellucci was wearing. It's kind of another case of Star Wars Eps 1 and 2, though...great FX, shame they forgot about the dialog and acting.
Trinity is still a greasy sappy love-bunnie (was it just me, or did her death speech seem to take about half the movie?), but Jada Pinkett Smith and a couple of girls in Zion kind of take over as the "ass-kicking icon of girl power" thing.

It's a good thing the movie was 90% eye candy.

I saw it. I liked it. Though I would have preferred a more concrete conclusion to the trilogy (if it will be a trilogy.) To me it's just a movie, not a philosophical question or anything "deep." If I want deep philosophical discussion and education I'll switch my major. I'm pretty sure there are people much more qualified to argue points of philosophy then the wichovsky(sp) brothers.
Really, The Matrix et all are really just a combination of what those two liked, Kung Fu, leather, bdsm, and random philosophical ideas. It's cool, but it's not deep and I don't really feel it deserves as much thought that some people are giving it. Hell, you could stare up at the night sky and try to imagine the enormity of the Universe and get deeper ideas than those presented in these movies.

That's where the sequels blew it, though. #1 was all about The Matrix, you know, the title of the movie?
The sequels shifted the focus to Zion and all things outside the Matrix. Any chance of getting us to really care about the Matrix itself (and the people in it) were lost as a result. They could have more accurately titled the show "Zion" or "Stuff That Isn't The Matrix".
Only the first movie really hit on the title theme and tried evoking some thought.

Ya they could have really flushed out the matrix part with more characters coming out of the matrix and participating in the movie etc.
And in the end the machines and the humans all get along. That doesn't make any sense. It's like Neo gave the machine a CHOICE it could understand or whatever. Weak allegory and metaphors when you start thinking about it.

Is there a book that Dark City was based on?
What about the Matrix?
I wonder if the story versions are any better =)

Matrix was all the Wachowski brothers.... they wrote the whole thing. so no book there.
As for Dark City... I'm not sure, but I don't think it was a based on a book.
