Get your Google toolbar

From google.com, on their main page, you can download a toolbar plugin that doubles as a popup blocker.

Works great. So not only can I do a search without having to first switch to google.com but now I can visit sites and not have all those popups come up.

Watch out though... it may block some windows that you want to come up...

I noticed once when i had a yahoo toolbar installed that included a pop up blocker (didnt know about it at first) that it was blocking some web based instant message windows that were coming up. I didnt know anyone was trying to message me.

I'm sure it is helpful... just watch out that it isn't blocking windows that you want to see.

The google bar doesn't interfere with Trillian, Yahoo!, MSN messenger or AOL IM, if that helps any. Not sure about ICQ. I'm a big Trillian fan, myself.

You can easily "whitelist" stuff with the Google bar.

So far the only thing it's blocked that I wanted was a popup from pizzahut.com telling me my pizza order had been recieved. One click put pizzahut.com on the whitelist and my box came up.

I mainly love it because shortly after installing it at home, someone sent me a link to this site that has all these old PC games on it (e.g., Empire Deluxe), most of which are free to download now. Unfortunately, the site subscribes to the "OMGWTF" school of web advertisements and would have been too annoying to use if not for a popup blocker.

For a while even CNN.com was using popups. Like goddamn, I refuse to click on a popup even if it's something I'm interested in, just out of spite. I wish more places would do like penny-arcade.com, where they only take ads that fall within specific parameters of not-being-annoying.

btw, if you hold the "ctrl" key when you click a link then googlebar won't block the popup from that page.
