The backlash of Oberyn's death astounds me. He was a bit player in the books and I didn't think he was much more in the series but the loss of the Red Viper has really pissed off viewers.
I knew a TV show just can't go around killing off its most important characters. It turns people off. If the Red Viper pisses people off then they are instore for some great dissapointment.

People liked the actor and the portrayal of him in the series.
Fuck, the readers of the books have been pining for Syrio Forel for a fucking decade and a good portion refuse to believe he is dead, and he is pretty irrelevant to the story as a whole.

[spoiler]The only really big death coming up is Tywin - and that won't really upset people, it will be viewed as justice. Other than that the only other death is maybe Jon, but I still fully believe he will either be saved or ressurected as Mellisandre and he will turn out to be Azor Ahai reborn instead of Stannis.[/spoiler]

Just got through episode 4 of the show last night. Didn't strong Belwas fight Mereens champion instead Dario I the books?
I love how evil they played joffrey.. When they casted all of the Lannisters they nailed it.

Their is Jon as you mentioned, possibly Brien, Poddrick and The Hound.
Arys Oakheart could have as big a role as Oberyn did and he bites it as well.[/spoiler]

Friend of mine and I were talking about this. We both agreed that HBO could let him film the final books and viewership would continue if not rise. Book sales might not change since people who read books, have made it this far, and are fans are probably going to buy anyway.

They are already showing things the books haven't caught up with yet unless my memory is that foggy. George RR Martin is an executive producer. It's not like they are making these episodes in a vacuum and have to rely on the written novels. They are getting the info they need from him. And hell, some of the dialogue they have on the show are not in the books and are BETTER. They are improving on the books and not getting bogged down by the minutiae.

[spoiler]True about The Hound, even though he is still alive most likely at the farm, people will whine about that. GRRM confirmed that Podrick and Brienne are still alive too, so I guess that depends on how they frame it.
We'll see about Arys, I completely forgot about him (most of the last couple books is pretty forgettable) - but I doubt he will be as popular as Oberyn's character, who was amusing - and according to the mrs - kind of attractive.[/spoiler]

I never thought Oberyn would be much of a character either but it turns out he was. I guess it depends how good the actor is and how much of a role they give him on TV. Their are a few more Oberyn types coming that could irk viewers.
I figured this would happen sooner or later. We debated earlier in this thread who is a major character and who isn't. Who turns out to be major when you cut from scene to scene can be anyone who steals the scenes. That doesn't bode well for the series.

It's ratings are continually going up and its already locked in for 2 more seasons so they are doing pretty well.
Hell the biggest PR problem they had was how rapey the Jaime raping Cersei scene was compared to the book.

Why not? Jerome Flynn was amazing as Bronn and added a whole new dimension to the character. I couldn't stand the whiny Davos in the books, but Liam Cunningham has turned him into an awesome character. Actors creating something from nothing in the books bodes well for the series in my opinion, especially considering how boring the last 2 books were. Hopefully the actors can carry that material and make it better.

I can't really think of any character where I felt the acting was weak on them(at least not at the moment) and the acting of the Lannisters in particular has been fantastic.
The worst thing about this series is that there's only 10 episodes a year! I watched episodes 1 through 8 in 2 days and am ready for more, and I already know what's going to happen!

Their have been other phenom shows that have ruined their cast and it can kill a show quite quickly. It is hard to find good people that are watchable and if you kill them off you kill off fans as well. That is the problem with not centering some episodes on longer aspects of all of the characters. They used to spend more time on characters by not filling them in on every episode. Now they try to get to everyone on every single episode.
That is what causes the Oberyn situation. A non character in the books become so important to the show simply because the main characters aren't getting enough air time.
Take Danny. They haven't advanced her plot in 8 episodes in the slightest.

My character issue has been Shae. The jealousy in the show just isn't in the book along with Tyrion spurning her to the degree HBO has shown. It detracts from Tyrion's character and story in my opinion.
[spoiler]it also makes her appearance in Tywin's bed appear to be out of spite vs a betrayal. It is hinted in the book, and my understanding, that she was a spy for Tywin from the beginning. This is revealed when she was in Tywins bed wearing the necklace. It could still end this way but the way Shae has gone seems more from being spurned vs a golddigger. A case of extra character fluff.[/spoiler]

[spoiler]I didn't take it that way at all... I took it in the book and in the show that it was her jealousy and not understanding/caring why Tyrion couldn't be with her that drove her to betray him.[/spoiler]

I suggest rereading it. My friend thought the same but because she is a minor character I think most people just go along with HBO.
[spoiler]She goes from "you will give her a baby and come back to me", to trial, to Tywins room. There, tyrion asks if she ever loved him and she pleds she did blaming his sister and father. However she was wearing a gold necklace of hands which symbolized she got paid. Then tyrion recited the poem the bard wrote, "hands of gold are always cold but a women's hands are warm. To me that means gold doesn't buy love. Remember, Tyrion wonders about the bard and Shae being together. That's not even in HBO.[/spoiler]

Again, I think a brilliant move on the showrunners part. Book readers know that Dorne will play a much bigger role as the series goes on, so this was a great way to get viewers a baseline of knowledge about Dorne as the new story lines unfold.
