It's the young and the beautiful who always get put on a pedestal, which leaves the silent majority (who are neither young nor beautiful) with their wistful dreams of one day being on a pedestal themselves, despite their flaws.
So when someone who is neither young nor beautiful actually makes it to the pedestal, it's an instant win with the populace. Everyone loves an underdog because so many people ARE underdogs.
There's probably some statement here about the disconnect between Hollywood and normal human beings (again!). Hollywood puts pretty people on the screen, but it's not until a normal person makes it big that people go wild. If Susan Boyle could sing like that and be 20, blond and with perky tits, she'd be popular, sure, but she wouldn't get the YouTube popularity she's getting now.
This tells me that the population is, in fact, still sane and good. We like seeing people win who don't fit the mold, because it makes us think it could someday be us.
It's modern Hollywood (which is to say, the modern model of television production in general) that's doomed. Their emotional disconnect from the world is nearly complete. They have no idea what normal people like or want.
