So, to sum up...
Get all of the beginner skill trees. Play the game making sure to use the skills that you want to advance (such as 1h sword). You will see the skill tree fill up with xp as you earn the appropriate experience. Untrain unused skills when the time comes.
What happened to me was I bought certain skill trees expecting to focus on them and then I found out that other areas were more fun and spent my time using them. Don't limit yourself early on because there is no penalty for untraining skills (except lost skill XP in the skill you are untraining) and you have plenty of skill points to start with. When you start to climb the skill trees they become more expensive, but early on there is plenty of room for experimentation.
