To me, if you could combine the successes of Planetside with some type of real immersion you would have the perfect game. If I logged onto planetside and really became immersed in the game world and the story, it would make the battle all the more exciting. Part of the immersion is the fact that I'd like it if I cared a little more about my character.
In short, add:
1. Immersion
2. Storyline
3. Caring about your character
and you have the best game ever. Constant pvp if you want it, constant backline hacking into bases, blowing generators, sneaking around mining bridges, etc etc.
