I am guessing the radiated zone is no different than anywhere besides being radiated?
Without a suit it would be hard to tell, I know things are out there but not sure what you need to survive it beyond a suit. You may need to be a Fortitude build to survive it.
I put a claim down at a missle silo on the far west of the desert near the wastelands. I cleared up the top part of the silo but didn't bother with the lower part. I put new doors on it to block anything from down below coming up (I don't think a single block will keep all of it clear). That seemed like the most fortified position with no work. I laid out working stations and it has 2 gun safes to help with storage. You can reach all the wasteland cities from this point yet get back to home in time for a bloodmoon.
