Yeah, Hodor is one of the very few characters that are given any light in the books (and show) that seem well... innocent. You had him and you had Stannis's daughter. Both wound up being sacrificed to the needs of others.
In the books you also had Tommen and Mrycela. They are older in the shows, so they can/could choose to affect there fate more than the others.
Granted, I think that if Hodor could have decided for himself, he might have ended up doing the same thing. We will never know.
