The show MAY go the route that it's because Throne wants power, but in the book its pretty clearly because of the view among many in the watch that letting the wildlings through was treason.
In the book Jon is killed because he wants to take the NightsWatch to Winterfell. I think the book is pretty clear that people only had minor issues with Jon until he went off the rails and wanted to march on Winterfell.
