A lot of the Malazans had similar personalities. But, they are foot soldiers so what did you expect?
As far as the philosophy/tribal lore/different world creation story that is present in every fucking book, you really have to expect something like that from a actual field Anthropologist/Archeologist.
Also I love how every tribe/nation thinks they are the bad asses of the world. Then they get there teeth kicked in.
