I had a Garmin but they wanted like $80 for map updates. Now I just use the Droid. It came with a built-in no-charge Google Navigation program that does turn-by-turn speech and all that. I've used that in newer housing developments and its been good.
Just make sure whatever you get, you take a close look at how map upgrades work.
