DAoC Roll-call - JawcnScelestus - 10-22-2003

Ok, who is pretty sure they are gonna be firing up thier old DAoC account? Rawc and I have been *starving* for some good PvP action with you guys, we haven't done much since we played AC2 last year(that was blast for its time, too bad Turbine still is "teh suk").

I assume if we are playing we are Hibernia on Ingraine, correct?

- Slamz - 10-22-2003

Yeah, might as well. Tempting to pick up my 38 Warden where I left off, but I figure I might as well start over on Ingrain or whatever. That new Animator class sounds swank, kinda like that AC2 class with the turrets.... and the things... and stuff...

Not sure when I'll do it, maybe this weekend.

- Aadrya - 10-22-2003

Wibble!

I have a new NS on Igraine, already 15 thanks to some whip crackin'.

Join me!

Make a bard so I dont have to walk everywhere!

Go now, while theres still time!

- Powerflux - 10-22-2003

So what's all this DAoC brainwashing this past week?

- Moristans - 10-22-2003

I'll give it a shot this weekend. I'll roll up a bard for yahs Aadrya.

- Flash - 10-22-2003

Ok, twist my arm, I'm in. But this means I'm closing shop on SWG. I might do a few more things then cancel.

- Veraphim - 10-23-2003

I think Grumples will have fun with Animist. The turrets aren't much like AC2 or TFC engineer turrets. You target the ground at the spot of your choosing and then you kinda plant a mushroom there. The mushrooms all cast spells. Some AE buff resists, Some spam root spells or DDs on the enemy, some debuff enemy armor class or resists. I think the limit on them is only based on your mana. I saw some guy in the BG the other day that had like 16 mushrooms all up near the keep. He had a whole line of the DD casting ones up near the wall and they were blasting the shit out of the archers on the walls.

Another nifty thing about them is you can "turret walk" your war party across the zone by just casting turrets up ahead and then moving up a little.

Anyway. My character is Jem and I'm an eldrich.

We played DAOC before we played Planetside.

I only played for about 3 months before quitting because like most MMORPG's, it was released earlier than it probably should have been, stuff didn't work, class balance was a mess, entire dungeons would drop nothing.... kinda like SWG!

But now it's been like 2 years since the release and it sounds like they've fixed a lot.

Really, DAOC is probably the best PvP MMORPG right now. Every server has large PvP areas and there are reasons you want to go there and fight people. You actually get awarded for PvP.

Not sure what your experience is with MMORPG's but you might like it. If you hate leveling then you obviously won't like it (or any MMORPG, most likely) but at least DAOC has a PvP light at the end of the tunnel -- fun stuff you can do once your character is maxed out in levels. I pretty well hit the end of the tunnel in SWG and there's no light there.

- Hoofhurr - 10-23-2003

I straight up don't have time. It kinda sucks. I'm studying for the GREs and if I do well on that I'm going to try the DATs and go to dental school. If all this works out I'll see you guys in 7 years when I have three day weekends to play RPGs for the rest of my life. I'm dreaming big right now.

- JawcnScelestus - 10-23-2003

Ok, Rawc and I are playing now. I'm a Sylvan Druid named Treepae, and he is a Sylvan Valewalker named Treepie. Veraphim = Jem, what else is everyone else playing as?

- Powerflux - 10-23-2003

Are the graphics really dated? I've seen some screenies and the game doesn't look that awesome.

Also, what's the leveling system like in that game? Is it simular to Anarchy Onlines or is it more D&D styled?

- Slamz - 10-24-2003

I hear the Atlantis graphics are good. I would say the graphics are lower end than SWG or AC2, but I'd also say that this is because they built the game to handle 30 vs 30 PvP battles. Post-expansion EQ and even SWG have sweet graphics, but when you turn the corner and see 50 people it goes down to 5 frames per second. I don't recall having that problem with DAOC, and that was on my older system.

Leveling system is similar to AC2, or Diablo. Somewhat similar to SWG. You go from level 1 to 50 and pick what skills to invest in along the way. You might have a healing skill branch, a damage skill branch and a buffing skill branch, plus points you might want to put into melee skills, and you won't have enough at level 50 to master everything.

Probably the big thing with AC2 is the central battleground area. There are keeps you can take over and relics to capture that give your realm some benefits. There's also high level dungeons that can only be accessed by controlling the keep that holds the entrance. There's siege engines to batter down the doors with and you fight the PC+NPC defenders to take it over.

Anyway, it's really the only MMORPG that has PvP with any sort of point to it. It's a lot of what I was hoping SWG would have become.

Grumples means DAOC.

Shrouded Isles(the first DAOC expansion) had improved graphics engine code. The water looks better and models, textures, and animation were beefed up. Atlantis will have further graphics improvements, including a redesign to the whole water/swimming thing, as right now you just swim across the surface like in SWG, but atlantis will allow underwater exploration, as the oceans are deep and there are entire underwater dungeons/towns/etc.

Like Grumples said, the game handles large-scale PvP better than just about anything else out there. 30 vs 30 and my machine has no problem, and my system is 3 years old. Running one of those new Alienware machines that few of these guys picked up and I'm sure the 50 v 50 fights wont be bad either. I've been involved in relic wars involving numbers in the area of 150+ participants, and while I do have some framerate problems, its not even as bad as a 20v20 in EQ, or just plain running through coronet without anyone dueling.

Part of what you see as dated graphics could be due to just the way the models are designed. Leprechauns, Firbolgs, Trolls, Kobolds, etc. are always gonna probably have a cartoonish look to them since they aren't humans. In-game, the graphics are prety nice, animation is smooth, and the spell efects blow away even the best single-player games released in the past month.

- Hoofhurr - 10-24-2003

tempted shit....

- Keetz - 10-25-2003

You can get ahold of me in-game on either of the following toons:

Thystle
She

Look me up when you finally log in.

- Aadrya - 10-26-2003

I am Kootz <The Empire>, an explosive Lurikeen Nightshade!

- Moristans - 10-27-2003

Prolixus the Twinkly Toed Celtic Bard.

- Keetz - 10-27-2003

I'll be on tonight, and will getcha invited to <The Empire> which is the guild we have all joined.

Big Grin

-Keetz

- Powerflux - 10-27-2003

I might give DAoC a try.

What's the guild's website y'all joined?

- Powerflux - 10-27-2003

Ah and how would the game run in a 30vs30+ PvP situation on a Geforce 2 Ultra 64mb? (I'm willing to play on minimal graphics settings.)

- Slamz - 10-27-2003

Not sure about the new expansion, but I'd think the main game should be fine.

I'm pretty sure I was playing DAOC on my 933 with a GeForce 2.

I still haven't reactivated, been playing PS + PS expansion beta all weekend. I'm thinking about giving FFXI a shot, I think that's out this week.

- Powerflux - 10-27-2003

I picked up the Gold Edition DAoC thingy.

Gonna make a Syvivian (or whatever) Valewalker on that Igname server. I'll see you guys in-game.

- Hoofhurr - 10-28-2003

Lemme know if you think it's any good man.

I've only been playing Raven Shield right now with some guys because it's easy to log in play for an hour and leave. Might start getting into league play.

- Powerflux - 10-28-2003

Well I'm level 4 now. I get lost a lot, wish this game had a minimap or some sort of map atleast, but otherwise it's pretty fun though I can't seem to find anyone my level willing to group.

I'm playing as Undertine on the Iggy server so send me a /tell if you guys will be playing today or if I could get an invite to that 'The Empire' guild.

- Keetz - 10-29-2003

Sorry Flux, I wasn't online at all last night, twas my birthday. Wink

I'll jump online at some point today (don't think I'll be going to work today) and getcha an invite to the guild.

The guild website is <!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.theempires.com">www.theempires.com</a><!-- w -->

Go there and look over the rules/regulations of the guild while you wait. Understand that it is a family-oriented guild, that has a few young'ns in it, so you absolutely cannot swear in guild chat. Chat groups, battlegroups, regular groups or whatever is no problem, just not in guild chat.

Anyway, I'll log on and find you, and as long as you don't have a problem with the rules, I'll getcha invited.
