Zune xbox question - Vanraw - 11-30-2010
I use Xbox as a media center for my main TV room. Sometimes I buy TV and or movies from zune, if they are not streamable with netflix.
I read that when you buy from Zune, that the content is playable on your PC, windows 7 Mobile phone, zune player etc. But I dont see away to play the content I have purchased via Xbox, and play it on my PC. For instance, I have all the Start trek Enterprise seasons on the xbox. How do I access the content via PC.
Anyone know?

Should be there when you login to the zune player on the pc, it was when my sucker roomate was paying for freelay available torrents on his xbox.
There are some hits that come up from the zune forum when you google it but it keeps bouncing me to the German zune site and i can't access the threads.

Hi we're Apple. We sell the same exact songs for .30 more than Amazon and silly conversions required! But we have the Beatles!

I can sit outside watching a movie on my iPad (or iPhone), then walk inside, press a button on my iPad, and instantly transfer the movie, from the point I'm currently at, to my 60" TV or 144" projector. Or watch it on my PC, if I want to. All seamless and easy to do. Not a description I'd apply to most Microsoft stuff.

I dont think anyone is defending Microslop here. pfft back at you. Can I listen to my itune purchased movie on my xbox or my android phone or my PC client that isnt itunes? No, if its not apple I cant.

No-one sells unprotected Hollywood movies that you can play anywhere you want.
I'm just saying I think the Apple ecosystem (iPad, Apple TV, iTunes) for playing those movies is more seamless and user friendly than the Microsoft or Amazon or whomever ecosystem.

That's because nobody else has a closed eco-system when it comes to things you can buy and what you can use them on.
e.g., Motorola makes a phone that uses Droid but Droid is not limited for use by only Motorola.
So if someone else makes a better phone that uses Droid, then the Droid fan can switch to the better phone.
If someone makes a better phone that uses iPhone software....well that would never happen. Because Apple doesn't allow it. Outside of China, anyway.
It's always "Apple vs the world", which is an interesting position for Apple and has probably kept them alive all these years, but as a consumer, it has never appealed to me. It would be like Apple coming out with a remote control car that only runs on Apple batteries. I don't care how cool it is; I'm not sure I want to be tied to one producer of batteries for the life of the product. I'd rather buy some other car that just runs on regular 9volt batteries that I can get anywhere.

Erm, but that was the point of my post - when it comes to video, everyone does has their own closed eco-system. If you buy a downloadable video from Amazon, you need the Amazon player to play it. If you buy a video with Zune, you need a Microsoft player or device to play it. How is that any different to Apple?

If only there was a way to stream all my media that i get for free onto every device in my apartment without paying for an overpriced giant iphone.

Honestly, I don't know why anyone would watch a movie on anything other than their home theatre system. Why give up the awesome surround sound and large screen to watch moving pictures on a stamp while listening on headphones? I won't compromise my viewing experience to watch movies or tv on my computer and I sure as shootin won't watch on anything smaller. Who cares how many inferior viewing experience devices you can seamlessly switch between?

How about sitting on a 3 hour flight or train ride? I used my wife's itouch alot when I was in the UK for 2 weeks last year. Headphones on, watching Pirates of the Caribbean that was purchased via itunes.

Interestingly enough I was unable to watch the same movie on the big screen at home since Apple wont open its DRM to Microsoft. On the other hand, I am able to watch Amazon rented and purchased video's on the xbox streaming them from the PC, as well as Zune purchased video's and netflix, and DIVX and etc etc. But for Apple content I have to have apple hardware or itunes which doesn run on all the various hardware out there including xbox, android, blackberry etc etc etc.
Also I can take a Mp3 purchased at Amazon and stream it through my Xbox, play it on itunes, media players and just about any device you can think of, but I cant do the same thing with a song purchased via itunes and apple. This is where your drinking the Apple kool aid. Buy apple media and you have to have apple hardware.
Don't get me wrong its a great business plan. I just don't like being locked into one vendor. In the end it will always end badly.

I cried on the inside when non-technical kids asked how to use iTunes purchased songs in their power points~
I dont know if it was when I converted all old iTunes mp4's to mp3 or when I updated iTunes to 10 that all the songs got substantially softer. I've had to go options on lots of songs to amplify them to a decent level.

Yes, but that's not the example under discussion of seamless transference of media from one device to another. You got a movie from iTunes then loaded and watched it on iDevice.

Fortunately on planes these days its a non issue, every flight has a screen on the back and theres always something to watch.. My Emirates flight to china had a bigger selection than i do at home and thats saying a lot.

The other big issue I have w/ planes is you're not allowed to use electronic devices anyway for the first 20-40 minutes of being on the plane after pushing back on the gate until you get to whatever altitude it is where you're allowed to turn it back on and for the last 30 min of the flight once you start your descent to land.
So if you're only on a 2-3 hour flight you're still twiddling your thumbs for a majority of the flight vs. just having a regular paperback or whatever that you can just open and not worry about. For most Americans (and Europeans for that matter) this is probably the duration of the vast majority of flights you'll likely be on.

However, the kids don't care, and my wife doesn't really either. It's nice to be able to watch a movie or TV show outside, or in a room without a TV. And a 10" screen held up close is actually pretty big.
But movies aside, here's a better example of the seemless transfer in action. You just been out with the kids (or a bunch of friends) doing something cool, and you took a bunch of photos and videos on your iPhone. You get home, or drop by a friend's house, and want to show them the pics and movies. But not on the phone screen, on their nice big 60" TV. No screwing around with computers or cables - you walk into the room, and two seconds later the video and photos are on the screen. To me, that's the killer feature of Apple right now that no one else has.
