Best day at work ever - Jakensama - 04-06-2009 Haha, so the owners of a ship we operate wants added security for the duration of their voyage past Somalia and the Gulf of Aden w/ all the pirate problems. I got to spend all day comparing the prices of various mercenary organizations ![]() I think we've stteled on the deal with 4 guys armed with AK 47 / machine gun 12.7 / RPG 7 / Sniper Rifle for 43,800 USD, but not sure if i wanna super size the deal and toss in an armed escort vessel. God bless the 21st century where ordering mercs is about as hard as getting a pizza. - Thudz - 04-06-2009 I'm in the wrong industry. - Jakensama - 04-06-2009 Yeah I told the owner that with the promise of shooting some Muslims I could probably get a bunch of rednecks from back in Texas to do this for free. - Thudz - 04-06-2009 I wonder how much a decommisioned Coast Guard Cutter would put me back? I could start my own marine security force and make some bank. - Jakensama - 04-06-2009 I think these guys just sublet shit from the Somalis. Start one up and I'll toss my future business your way. - Fretty - 04-06-2009 I'm in. I want to shoot people. But really though? Is it THAT easy to hire mercs? In fact, is it SO easy to hire them that pricing of multiple organizations was readily available for comparison? I mean, where do you even begin to look for places to hire them? Do you head to Google and search "mercs for hire"? Honest question actually. - Jakensama - 04-06-2009 You can google maritime security services/armed security consultants etc. I asked a couple other shipping companies for ones they used, called them up and they sent me brochures with pricing options. - Gnarnok - 04-06-2009 Jakensama Wrote:they sent me brochures with pricing options. I'd love to see those lol.
- Jakensama - 04-06-2009 Heres the option I think we are going with ![]() http://img127.imageshack.us/img127/6564/merch.jpg - Gnarnok - 04-06-2009 hahaha. Thats great. Guy looks like a badass sailor. - Slamz - 04-06-2009 $43,000 for 3 days? Yep, we're in the wrong business. I also bet that if you fire a couple shots into the air, 99% of pirates will turn away. No sense confronting an armed ship when there's plenty of unarmed ones. - Dustie - 04-06-2009 That is crazy. I wonder if the pirates will back down, look for other non-protected ships, or simply counter this with more fire power. - Jakensama - 04-06-2009 For the bigger ships 43 grand is a weeks worth of fuel or less, so not a big expense. I think its a deterrant, most pirate attacks are from small speedboat teams, although the governments have warned not to hire mercs as the risk of escalation could be worse than paying Ransom and nullify your insurance... - bonestomper - 04-06-2009 may i cross post that jpg do a different board? they aren't from Texas, but i know a bunch of rednecks that would shoot pirates for a lot less than that. - Jakensama - 04-06-2009 Knock yourself out, I would have linked the whole brochure but its a pdf and i dont have a conversion program at work. - Vanraw - 04-06-2009 That's interesting. They are freelanced out of Somalia? I bet some of these guys play both side. ie, The old mafia scheme. Pay me protection or my (oops I mean "some") pirates will hurt you...... I steal your ship, you pay me 50k ransom. You pay me 50k upfront and my pirates just ride along side.... - Jakensama - 04-06-2009 Its some London based gang of killers that is licensed to legally operate off of Somalia coastal territory (i.e. that has adequately bribed the right people in what passes for Somalia's government). This is not common for legitimate carriers and none of our charterers have ever requested it, but if this guy wants to take the risk its his problem, not ours. - Thudz - 04-06-2009 http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/africa/04 ... index.html I hope this wasn't your ship Jake. - Venganza - 04-06-2009 Sad that it's that bad in that corner of the world. That said I'd do that job in a heartbeat, escort rich dildos through scum infested waters for nice cash. - Jakensama - 04-06-2009 Nope, but maybe those owners wished they had spent the 43gs on mercs
- Hoofhurr - 04-06-2009 Awesome. There's a video game in here somewhere. - Gnarnok - 04-06-2009 Sounds like Counter-Strike meets POTBS to me - Jakensama - 04-06-2009 Hoofhurr Wrote:Awesome. There's a video game in here somewhere. Actually the whole time I was on the phone I was thinking of that old video game Jagged Alliance that was a turn based strategy/rpg where you hired and managed a team of mercs as you were taking back this island.. - Dustie - 04-06-2009 ..Yeah, or an RTS where you send out your economic units and optionally send a millitary unit with them for protection. Sometimes you figure the cost of losing 1 "villager" in 20 is less then sending out a merc with each one. - Zeel - 04-06-2009 Jagged Alliance was awesome! I don't know if I could cut it being a RL Jagged Alliance merc... The whole getting shot at thing bothers me a little. I really get a kick out of the fact that you get to spend time getting paid to research mercenary escorts... you win today's cool job award. |
