What do you use?
Ive had Mcfee. I quit it a long time ago. Wenbt to Norton. Norton became a resource hog, quit it, went back to mcafee, was ok for a while, now its more of a virus then the protectin it provides.
There are a bunch or shareware / non major brand names.

I work at a locally owned computer service shop. I'll give you the same recomendations I'd give our customers.
If it had to be one program? I use a lot of free programs myself but I haven't really found a pay program that is better then any of these.

it's free forever and auto updating. You'll have to "register" with them (give them an email addy) in order to use it more then 60 days. The cool thing about it has a bootime scan. That boottime scan is my tool of choice for virus fighting. It's VDDB is about the best incursion recovery tool i've seen yet.

a pretty good adware removal tool. It's innoculate function is a MUST for any computer. i usually follow up spybot with:

And oldie but still a goodie. Ad-aware was the commercial product that resulted from grc.com's "optout" years ago. it's quick, updates a lot, and easy to use.
About half of my business comes from virus/spyware/malware/badware removal @ $55/hour. So I do a LOT of virus removal. I've got four machines running scans right now. We use about 10-20 tools in sequence to make sure we get them all.

Went from panda to AVG to AVast. Thought Avast was gonna nail me for a fee but I like it so far. Glad to hear its just registration.

Trend Micro is what most Geeksquad's use and it works very well. Its also rated highly by consumer reports.
Spyware is a much bigger concern then virus, spyware leads to virus. I dont even have anti virus program on my computer because if you dont do stupid shit you arent at risk.
Windows Defender Beta has kept my system clean for 6months now. Its a free download and has updated on average every other day it seems like. Try it out.
I will tell you other free programs like spybot/ad-aware are useless and dont prevent or able to fix half the nasty shit out there. Windows Defender is the exception, and trend micro lets you do free scans to see what nasties you got.

Oh I agree, I just don't recomend software that costs money to buy usually.
I don't like paying for things when something almost as good is cheaper or free. it's the same reason to buy off brand stuff.

Yea I use windows defender and CCleaner. Does a real good job at keeping the PC clean and running nice.
But I wont run with out AV, you you shouldn't either Diggles. Hell, Ive seen viruses in shrink wrap software before.
Ive read a couple of reviews that show Avast as good, but it misses some of the virus out there. What Im finding is Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6 looks to be one of the best and has the least impact on performance.
Cnet has it as editors choice.

I use Avast on all my PCs, it works well with very little system usage. I'm not a fan of Windows Defender, it does a decent job of actively protecting you against malware, but it is very poor at removal. I have tested alot of different malware removal programs and found that Webroot Spysweeper removes the most from an infected system. A heavily infected system requires the use of multiple programs in order to remove all threats.

I use Norton Internet Security for both Firewall and Virus protection, and throw in Ad-Aware from time to time to catch the spyware crap.
Speaking of system utilities, I'm not sure with which frequency you guys defrag your drives, but if you guys are like me and are constantly installing and removing software, the drive will be pretty heavily fragmented. The default Windows defrag only does a so-so job of improving this situation. I recently came across Diskeeper and have found this to be far superior to the default Windows defrag app. I have noticed a speed increase in all my apps due to this.

I'm also a Norton user. I have System Works...basically everything heh. Its kept my machine up and running for 3+ years without me ever having to need to rebuild it due to a virus. Its caught quite a few virus's before they were able to do damage.
Because of that...I'll never go without a Virus Protector again! Whether I keep Norton or not though.../shrug. I like it right now.

Interesting on the defrag. Yea I agree windows defrag sucks big time.

FYI, I went with Kaspersky Anti-Virus. Been using it for about a month, and I have to say that I give it a 10 out of 10. I'm amazed at how light and fast it is. Very happy if you looking for a shrink wrap package.
Im usimng version 6. I just read they have a version 7 that just released. Not sure Ill upgrade since I happy now.

we've had several new computers come onto our home network in the past year (including a new server), and we've got a lot of older machines that continue to need protection.
I chose Worry-Free Business Security, from Trend Micro. we got the Standard version, because we don't have an Exchange server here in the house. it has a nice web console for centralized administration (not that there's any administration needed) and I get blanket protection for 10 machines (servers or workstations) for less than $25 per machine per year (we got a 10-user license with 2 years of maintenance).
I'm not using all 10 licenses yet, but it's nice to be able to bring up new machines at any time and have them protected, without keeping track of a half-dozen different license keys needing renewal on different dates.
this kind of option won't be useful to most of you, I know, but I'm happy with it.

Used to work as a computer technician. I have my OS on a partition that I reformat once a month. Data / programs remain intact.
Time invested: 1 hour reformat (mostly automated with a disk i made)
Security: 100%

There are alot of programs the put dll's and such in the windows directories, not to mention registry settings, ini parameters etc, that would force you to reinstall programs every time you did this.
Unless all you have is games on your PC, re-formating is a terrible idea.

I serviced so many machines, and got so good at doing it easily that I also enjoy the added speed and clean registry that it provides.

While this thread is still floating at the top I want to add a couple of programs.
PG2 is a simple program that blacklists Ip ranges.
It is primarily aimed at blocking the IPs of known companies that scan bittorrent networks for illegal usage.
But it also blacklists known spam, virus, and malware sites.
It is 100% free.

McAfee -- not because it is the best but becausr thats what we use at work and I try to keep my home systems pretty much in line with work. I'm an IT guy so this gives me more hands on with the tools I don't normally provide tier 1 support for.
I do have my Game files excluded from my on-access virus scans but they do get scanned a few times per week with my scheduled scans.
If I was not using McAfee I'd probably use AVG.
