computer noise. help me fix it please - TinStar - 11-14-2013
My wife's computer is making this noise. It's somewhat sporadic but it seems like it is happening more often lately. She also claims that when it starts making this noise her internet starts moving slower. My guess is maybe the hard drive is starting to fail as it seems like the noise is coming from the area where the hard drive is. You may need to turn your speakers up a little bit to hear it. Any ideas?

a clicking noise is generally the hard drive dying. back up your data now while you still can; at some point in the future the drive will fail completely.
I can't think of any other component in your PC that would make a clicking noise, except perhaps for a built-in speaker programmed to emit that sound, but PC's rarely have those anymore.

Check your fans, especially case fans. Could be a loose wire tapping a fan blade or the fan itself wobbling just enough to hit its own casing. I've had that before.
If you can verify it's coming from a drive, then it's time for a new drive.

Never heard anything like that... if it was a fan or hard drive it would be much faster(I would think). I would take the case door off and try to locate where it is coming from.

I was thinking fan but like I said when the noise occurs she says the computer starts acting slow(all she does is browse the internet). Also the noise is a pretty consistent pattern(as in it happens about the same time apart).
to me the sound sounds like a stereo receiver turning on and off over and over again.

I just got on her computer to take the cover off and the monitor had a message "Windows has detected a hard disk problem".. Well. That pretty much sums it up I guess

yeah sounded like maybe one of the tracking arms of the HD was dying. Hope you backed up your stuff. If it was just an arm, you could technically just replace it depending on how important that data was to you. Buy SSD!

I am backing it up right now. The clicking noise actually stopped
I am fixing to go buy her a new hard drive. Doubt I will get her an SSD though as all she does is browse the interwebs but she also keeps a ton of pictures on her computer (typically, although this computer is void of pictures...). Oh and I'm cheap!

most likely HD dying. Although I have seen CD-Roms do strange stuff where they are on their way out and make odd noises/lockups even though there is no disc in the drive.
Most computers now have diagnostics in the bios or option to boot to diagnostics in the boot menu, I'd run that, or burn an ISO for DFT, which is what I use
If the drive is failing you have LESS than 2 weeks to get your data off before drive dies. DO NOT USE THE COMPUTER AT ALL until you backup then run diagnostics SECOND. Diagnostics, especially thorough ones like DFT advanced test can be the final nail in the coffin for a failing drive. DO NOT continue to operate the computer like nothing has happened, you've been given your warning, take heed.
Also if you have a basic understand of computer setup/bios, I would disable the splash screen logo shit that all manufacters wanna show you, and have you actually show the POST test results. Half the time you hear this noise the drive would have told it its failing the SMART
Make sure you read newegg reviews on replacement harddrives and dont get offbrands. Pretty sure Western DIgital still holds reliability record, but AVOID its 'green' line
